Ballast and Natural Ground Cover
Famous Reading Anthracite Coal is accurately sized and it has the sheen, the shape, the color, and the texture of real anthracite coal because it's the real deal. It comes directly from the Reading Anthracite coal mines in Pennsylvania. The sizes range from #1 through 5. In 1/48 scale, #2 matches what would be the largest consumer size, which is named "Broken", while the # 1 matches the next smaller size known as "Egg". Both sizes were used in industry and in home heating. It's a must for retail coal yards, steam engine servicing facilities, coal sheds, powerhouses, etc.
Here’s a tiny detail that you don't ever see—sand along the tracks where engines apply their sanders in order to gain traction. You'll see this on grades or anyplace where an engine stops regularly like at a station.
And, of course, this light colored, fine grain sand can be used at the sand house in yards, at a sand and gravel facility or simply as another texture and color variation in your ground cover.
As you can see in this photo, a totally realistic effect is obtained by combining both the fine and the coarse grades with other scenic textures. I like to randomly sprinkle the fine grade, then fill in with the coarse. Generally, if it's a level surface, I'll use more of the fine. If I'm covering a hillside, I'll favor the coarse (the coarse grade also helps to hold additional textures in place while bonding.)
Rock Creek Sand is a fine textured, medium colored sand. This natural grayish brown blend adds yet another tone and texture to your scenery base. This is also a great ground cover for industrialized areas.
I used the fine grade to obtain the pebbly surface shown in this photo. Note the subtle color variation and natural texture. Generally, I sprinkle both the fine and the coarse sand over my natural earth to add additional textures and depth to the areas surrounding factories and warehouses. You don't have to be an artist to make convincing scenery. The secret is to avoid uniformity. Superior Sand is a dark colored, grainy sand direct from the shores of Lake Superior. It is an excellent ground cover for industrialized areas.
Street Schmutz – I couldn’t think of a better term to describe this product. In real life you'll find this gray powdery grit along curbs, in intersections, around pot holes, between pavement and cobblestone etc. Look at my photos and see how I have used it. It’s that little understated detail that makes a scene believable.
A finer Street Schmutz you will not find! Just 6.95 for 2 ounces –this stuff goes a long way; you'll probably never need another bag.
